Volvo XC90 [2002-2006]
Volvo XC90 debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, being the first large SUV launched by Volvo. The SUV had a robust design, with a strong, elegant appearance and specific Volvo elements. Its robust design and generous interior space quickly attracted attention, especially with families, but its strong point was safety – offering the first rollover protection system and curtain airbags on all three rows of seats.

The Volvo XC90 was launched with a choice of five- and six-cylinder engines, all transversely mounted. In 2004, the range was expanded with a powerful, aluminum V8 engine that was mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
At the time, Thatcham research found that since its introduction, the XC90 had not been involved in a single fatal accident, a testament to these innovations.
Volvo XC90 Facelift [2007-2014]

The first update in 2007 brought a more refined exterior design both front and rear, but also an improved interior, introducing advanced technologies such as parking sensors and adaptive headlights. Until the launch of the second generation, the XC90 received small design and technology updates.
Volvo XC90 [2015-2019]
The second generation XC90 was a real revolution for Volvo, but also a rebirth, under the new Chinese ownership of Geely. It was engineered with a completely new design that was based on the SPA modular platform, a stronger platform that offers weight reduction while improving safety and efficiency.

The XC90 also came with an ultra-luxurious interior with high-quality materials and intelligent assistance technologies.
Under the hood, Volvo installed Drive-e 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline or diesel engines. The top model, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, is a plug-in hybrid that develops 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque.
Volvo XC90 [2019-2024]
The XC90 received a refresh in 2019, still offering space, luxury and a sophisticated but minimalist design, with small stylizations both at the front and at the back. Premium interior details include Nappa leather and finishes such as wood, aluminum or carbon fiber.

Still, safety remains a priority for Volvo, with the XC90 coming equipped with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and semi-autonomous driver assistance.
Volvo XC90 [2025]
Volvo introduced the second facelift for the second generation XC90 SUV in 2024, bringing a completely new front design with a distinct interpretation of the iconic Volvo Iron Mark emblem. LED headlights with the distinctive “Thor’s hammer” design and new aerodynamic details have brought a modern and sporty look to the SUV, while keeping its overall shape unchanged from the previous model. The profile has been refreshed with new front fenders and clean side trims, and Volvo-specific vertical LED taillights have continued to set it apart from the competition.

Inside, the contemporary Scandinavian design continues, with a more horizontal dashboard and textured materials, but also new vertical air vents and improved lighting. Also, the new 28cm diagonal touchscreen runs a Google-based infotainment system similar to the EX30 and EX90 electric models.
In terms of powertrains, despite the initial commitment to switch to fully electric vehicles, the 2025 XC90 will continue to be offered as a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid, with the diesel variant being phased out in 2023.
Thus, after two decades, the Volvo XC90 has experienced an extraordinary transformation, still keeping its essence as a safe and luxurious SUV, but adapting to modern needs through continuous innovations. Write us in the comments your opinion about the evolution of the Volvo XC90 over the years.
